The one shift: From grouping to adaptation and relationship thinking — why does an animal behave this way in this environment, why do plants and insects depend on each other. This is the last EVS year before Science and Social Studies split at Class 5, so it's your best opportunity to build the reasoning habits that carry directly into formal Science.

Short written responses (2–3 sentences) are appropriate now, but the strongest assessment at this level is still explain-in-your-own-words — orally or written — because it's the only way to distinguish genuine understanding of adaptation from memorised textbook phrasing ("the polar bear has thick fur to survive in cold weather" recited vs. reasoned).
CBSE schools may be using either the older Looking Around (27 chapters) or the newer NCF-aligned Our Wondrous World (10 chapters, 5 units) — both cover this term structure, just at different granularity; the newer book groups content closer to how this guide sequences it. For CISCE, Class 4 is the year to be most explicit with parents/school leadership that your EVS content is NCF-aligned by design (not board-mandated), since it's the year doing the most groundwork for the Class 5 Science split.
