1. Classroom Opener (The Powder Puzzle)

Demonstration: Show the class a large, real flower (like a Hibiscus or Lily) and carefully brush your finger against the center so yellow dust gets on your finger.
Show the class your finger.
Ask: "What is this yellow dust? Why do flowers have it?"
Concept: Explain that this dust is called pollen, and plants absolutely need to move this dust to other flowers to make seeds. But plants can't walk! So, they hire delivery workers.

2. Core Concepts: The Plant-Insect Relationship

A. The "Delivery Workers" (Pollinators)

Bees, butterflies, moths, and even birds are pollinators.
The Trade: The flower creates sweet liquid called nectar. The insect comes to the flower to drink the nectar for food.

B. How Pollination Happens

A bee lands on Flower A to drink nectar.
While it drinks, the sticky yellow pollen rubs off onto the bee's furry body.
The bee flies to Flower B to get more nectar.
The pollen from Flower A falls off the bee onto Flower B.
This mixing of pollen allows the plant to grow a fruit with seeds inside!

C. Seed Dispersal

Once a seed is made, it can't just fall right under the parent tree (it won't get enough sunlight).
Plants use the wind (dandelion fluff), water (coconuts), or animals (eating fruit and pooping out seeds, or burrs sticking to fur) to spread their seeds far away.

3. Classroom Activity: The Cheeto Pollination Game

Prep: A bag of cheese puffs (Cheetos), small paper cups (the "flowers"), and paper bags (the "hives"). Draw a flower on the bottom of each cup.

The Task:

Put 3 Cheetos in every cup.
Have students act as "bees". They must go to a flower cup, grab a Cheeto, and "eat" it (or put it in their hive bag).
Rule: They cannot wipe their hands!
After visiting 3 different cups, have them look at their fingers and the edges of the cups.
Discuss: Their fingers are covered in orange cheese dust (pollen), and they have accidentally spread that dust to every cup they touched.

4. Assessment Check (Reasoning)

Question: "Many flowers that open at night are bright white and have a very strong, sweet smell. Why do you think night-blooming flowers need a strong smell, while day-blooming flowers just use bright colors?" (Looking for the reasoning: Moths/bats need to find them in the dark using smell, since colors are hard to see at night).
