The one shift: From naming to first habits and simple comparisons ("this is bigger than that," "I do this before that"). Still no functional reasoning — that starts Class 3.

Water: Sink-or-float sorting with classroom objects — introduces observation-based classification without naming it as such
Family: Draw-and-describe your family — oral description while drawing, not a written paragraph

Assessment Approach

Continue oral + observational checks. Introduce very short (1–2 line) drawing-with-a-label tasks now that fine motor and letter formation are more ready — but grade the concept, not spelling.

Watch For

Comparisons that are too abstract ("which is more important, air or water?") — Class 2 children aren't ready for ranking abstract concepts; keep comparisons concrete and physical
Publisher workbooks pushing fact recall ("name three uses of water") before the child has actually observed those uses — always precede fact questions with a hands-on or discussion moment

CBSE follows NCERT's Looking Around Class 2 sequence directly. For CISCE, this term structure is your fallback — check with your school if a publisher order exists, but don't feel bound to follow a workbook's chapter order if it front-loads abstract content before concrete groundwork.
