Note on Biotechnology - Applications
Biotechnology has a wide range of applications in various fields, including health, agriculture, and environmental management.
Humulin Milestone In 1983, the American company Eli Lilly became the first to produce genetically engineered human insulin, marketed as Humulin, using E. coli bacteria.
Vaccines (Recombinant Vaccines):
Gene Therapy:
Stem Cell Technology:
Molecular Diagnosis:
Competitive Edge: The "Alkaline" Trap Why does the Bt toxin kill the insect but not the Bacillus bacteria? Because it exists as an inactive protoxin in the bacteria. It only converts into an active toxin in the ALKALINE pH of the insect's gut (which solubilizes the crystals). If an exam option says "acidic pH," it is a trap!
Transgenic animals are animals that have had their DNA manipulated to possess and express an extra (foreign) gene.
Biosafety Issues:
GEAC (Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee):
Biopiracy:
Biopatents:
Examples of Biopiracy:
These cases highlight the need for international agreements and national laws to protect traditional knowledge and prevent biopiracy, ensuring equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of genetic resources.
