Animal Grouping and Homes

1. Classroom Opener (The Movement Game)

Ask the class to stand up. Say: "I am going to say an animal's name. I want you to move exactly how that animal moves, but stay in your spot!"
Say: Snake (they wiggle), Bird (they flap), Fish (they make swimming motions), Frog (they hop), Horse (they run in place).
Concept: Explain that scientists put animals into groups to make them easier to study. Today, we are going to group them by how they move.

2. Core Concepts: Grouping Animals

A. Grouping by Movement

Walkers and Runners: Animals with strong legs (Lions, Dogs, Humans, Horses).
Flyers: Animals with wings and light bodies (Birds, Bats, Butterflies).
Swimmers: Animals with fins or flippers (Fish, Whales, Dolphins).
Crawlers: Animals that slither on their bellies or have very short legs (Snakes, Earthworms, Crocodiles).

B. Animal Homes (Natural vs. Man-made)

Natural Homes: A bird builds a nest, a lion lives in a den, a rabbit digs a burrow, and a monkey lives on trees.
Man-made Homes: We build a stable for horses, a shed for cows, and a coop for hens.

3. Classroom Activity: The Great Animal Sort

Prep: You need 12–15 picture cards of random animals.

The Task:

Call students to the board and ask them to stick the picture in one of 4 columns: Walk, Fly, Swim, Crawl.
The "Why" Check: Once a picture is placed (e.g., a Penguin under 'Swim'), ask the student: "Why did you put the penguin in the Swim group and not the Fly group? It has wings!"
Expected reasoning: "Because penguins use their wings like flippers to swim in the water, they don't fly in the sky."

4. Assessment Check (Reasoning)

Question: "A frog can swim in the water and hop on the land. If you had to create a new group for animals like the frog, what would you name it? Why?" (Introduces early concepts of amphibians without needing the technical vocabulary yet).
