Misconception 1:Recycling is the best and first solution to waste.Correction: Recycling is actually the last resort of the 3 Rs! It requires massive amounts of energy. The most effective step is always to Reduce (create less waste in the first place).
The most effective way to manage waste is to reduce its generation at the source:
Reduce: Minimize the use of materials that become waste (e.g., using cloth bags instead of plastic).
Reuse: Use items multiple times instead of discarding them (e.g., glass jars for storage).
Recycle: Process waste materials into new products (e.g., recycling paper, plastic, and metal).
The process of burning waste at very high temperatures (above 1000°C) in a furnace called an Incinerator.
Best for: Biomedical waste (needles, bandages) as it kills pathogens and reduces waste volume by 90%.
Drawback: Can release toxic gases if not properly filtered.
Hazardous Emissions
If incinerators operate at low temperatures or lack proper filters, they can release dangerous chemicals like dioxins and furans into the atmosphere.
Open Dumping vs. Sanitary Landfill
Open dumping is simply throwing waste in an open area, which causes foul smells and breeds pests. Sanitary landfills are engineered systems designed to protect the environment and groundwater.
